WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This program supports AOD students wanting supervised hours (externship) while in a classroom setting. The classes are five hours, one time a month, for nine months.

The WRM-TA practicum program is facilitated by a licensed or certified instructor and the student is required to gain 255 hours of field practicum work under a practicum site supervisor.

This program is designed for alcohol and drug counselors, social workers, case managers and other health care professionals who want to enhance or develop the knowledge and skills necessary for professional practice in alcohol and drug studies.

Students completing this class will receive a certificate of practicum completion for on-the-job supervised hours and a 45 academic hour completion.

The Practicum course is part of the WRM-TA Comprehensive CAADAC Program. (See Comprehensive SP-AOD II). If you are enrolled in the Comprehensive SP-AOD II program your Practicum course is included in your program and your tuition fee.

CAARR or Breining Institute students who are interested in becoming CAADAC may take this as a standalone course.

It is also available for participants who are interested in gaining supervised hours or improving skills through clinical supervision. The cost: $549 includes registration fee ($20), course material fee ($30), tuition ($499), certificate of completion and a written exam to prove competency.


Instruction will include the following:

The basic and advanced tasks, skills, knowledge and responsibilities that constitute the work of an addiction counselor. There is a major focus on the importance of cultural and gender responsive services within the following dimensions:

Competencies and Practice Dimensions:

• Clinical Evaluation
• Treatment Planning
• Referral
• Service Coordination
• Counseling
• Documentation
• Client, Family, and Community Education
• Professional and Ethical Responsibilities.
• 12 Core Functions of a Counselor.

In addition, it will include oversight of completion of 255 hours of supervised practicum.

The primary instructional strategies used are self-directed learning, written assignments, self-assessment, lecture, presentations, peer exchange and reflective practice. These concepts are woven together using sound instructional design methodology to improve the competency and skill level of the counselor.
